The word “family” still evokes a Kodak picture of a father, mother and 2.2 children. But even in its stereotypical heyday, the traditional family picture probably needed a wider lens. Today, that is truer than ever before.
From 1990 to 2000, the number of households in which three or more generations lived together grew by more than 38%. And that number has continued to grow. According to a study by the Pew Research Center, more than 16% of all Americans lived in multi-generational households by 2008.
Although the percentage of Americans living in “non-traditional” households has grown, the vast majority of products, services, housing designs, advice, reviews, and activities still target the nuclear family.
– An eventual empty nest is considered the norm, even though birds are flocking back home — with grandchildren in tow.
– In 42% of all households that include grandparents, a grandparent is the primary caregiver for a grandchild.
– The influx of immigrants from Asia and Latin America has resulted in the formation of more multi-generational households. Like the European families who preceded them nearly a century ago, these households serve as a rich cultural comfort zone and provide a foundation for growth and learning in a new home country.
